•  The school at present

In this academic year, 652 students in 23 classes attend our school. There is a consultant for education, a coordinator for prevention against addictions, as well as coordinator for enviromental education—all helpful for our students.

The pupils study according to the school educational program, valid since 1.9.2008, which comes from National Curriculum ISCED 3A for higher secondary education.

        Forms of study

        1.Billingual  Slovak/Spanish  study – 5 years

In each year there are two classes. Applicants can be pupils of 8th or 9th class from elementary school.

Language preparation: we do not expect a knowledge of Spanish language from applicants; almost all are beginners. We call the first year of the study „language preparation“ because the number of Spanish lessons during this year is almost 20 per week.

Foreign language: in the second year a student elects a second foreign language from the following:

        • English
        • German
        • French
        • Russian

Billingual subjects: from the second year the subjects Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology are taught billingually, which also means that only one lesson from a total number of lessons for one subject is taught in Slovak; the rest are in Spanish. In the 5th year Esthetics, History, and Life and Culture of Spain are taught in Spanish as well.

Study final: in the 4th year students take school leaving exams/Maturita in Slovak language and Literature. This subject is not taught in the 5th year. In the 5th year students take the school leaving exam in Spanish Language and Literature and in the other two subjects, but at least one of them must be in Spanish language.

After finishing their study, students obtain a school leaving certificate valid according to Slovak legislation accepting an International agreement between the Ministry of Education, Slovak Republic and the Ministry of Education, Spanish Kingdom. A student obtains the academic degree of “Bachelor,“ a Spanish certificate valid at Spanish universities and in the European Union, and as well as a national language certificate in Spanish language.

        2. Regular/classical 4-year studies or Regular study programme – 4 years

Regular/classical studies - we open one class in each year.

The school educational programme: in conjunction with the state educational programme we have enhanced the teaching of Humanities as well as IT subjects. We believe that the graduates of these classes can apply for a position in public administration, diplomacy, etc.

Foreign languages: students learn 2 foreign languages; the first foreign language is English, while Spanish, German, French or Russian can be chosen as the second foreign language.

Final Year: in the 4th year pupils can select 16 lessons in their timetable from the subjects which are the most important to them in their future profiling.

This provides them with quality preparation for graduation, university studies and perhaps even their future career.

        1. A class with extensive English language studies - we open one class in each year.

The school educational programme: the school educational programme is modified in order to allow extended English studies in all of the four years.

Final Year: in the 4th year pupils can select 14 lessons in their timetable from the subjects which are the most important to them in their future profiling. This provides them with quality preparation for graduation and university studies. Moreover, some subjects are taught by an American lecturer. The teaching of computer studies is strengthened too. The students who attend this class can obtain a report of the state language examination in English, Cambridge exams or other certified exams in English.

        Graduates

Thanks to the high quality of the general education provided by our school, our graduates are prepared to study at any Slovak university or college. Almost one hundred percent of students continue their studies at colleges or universities every year. Our graduates are successful in their further studies at universities not only in Slovakia, but also in Spain as well as in other EU countries or even outside of the EU (e.g. in the USA). Our graduates are specialized mainly in humanities and social studies, which means they are able to work in the sphere of public and state administration, diplomacy, government, etc.

Our graduates also possess excellent skills in two foreign languages and computer studies.

Furthermore, our teachers lead students towards independence, self-confidence and creativity by means of their involvement in various school events, projects or competitions. Thus the students acquire a lot of communication and organizational skills and are able to express their own opinions and find solutions to problems in different life situations.

        School Activities

Our school is involved in several partnership projects and has partner schools in England, Ireland, Nepal, Hungary. We have also been seeking other partner schools with an aim to increase our offering of exchange programs (teacher and student exchanges) in order to improve foreign language skills, explore the diversity of the cultures as well as exchange teaching experience and compare the teaching methods. See also Foreign Visits

At present our school has 32 after-school clubs which are led by our teachers. Attending the clubs, the students have a possibility to spend their free time in a more meaningful way. For more see After-school Clubs

Our school also supports talented students in organizing events such as Olympiads, various competitions in different subjects and a so-called Secondary School Scholarly Work Competition. Every school year we publish our newsletter (Bulletin) and the students publish their own school magazine.  For further information see Subject Boards

We also have a Students´ Board led by a teacher–coordinator from our school. They participate in organizing such events as The Days of Spanish Culture, the Matriculation Ceremony for freshmen or the Night at School. They also help to find solutions to various school problems and actively participate in the process of school development.

        School premises, facilities and equipment

There is a wide range of facilities and equipment available to our students:

        • gymnasium with fully equipped fitness centre,
        • cafeteria,
        • canteen with kitchen,
        • two internet cafes,
        • copy centre,
        • student radio – Park Radio,
        • own internal TV station,
        • relaxation area equipped with machines for exercise, just to name a few.

Above all, however, we offer our students modernly-equipped special classrooms and labs for teaching mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and foreign languages. There are 3 multimedia classrooms mainly designed to teach computer science but are also used for teaching other academic subjects.

In addition, a projector with  a screen is installed in each class.

The students living in distant areas are offered accommodation in a secondary school campus/ dormitory.

To use our students’ potential and creativity, we try to involve them in modifications to improve the premises of our school - mainly classrooms, halls and corridors.

Our goal is to make our students feel comfortable at school.

Events during the school year 2012/2013

Our school is well-known in Košice because of its regular activities.

We were at the film premiere of “Murderer's Diary” that was made in Spanish by our student, Marco Procházka. We helped to bring the work of two Spanish photographers to the city through an exhibition in “Le Bistro” in the Optima shopping mall. We took part in “The Europe Day of Languages 2012” in CVČ Domino. See more information in “Days of Spanish Culture 2012”.
